In Wild Swing, Stocks Give Up Rate-Cut Gains

By MICHAEL M. GRYNBAUM
Published: November 2, 2007

A day that dawned bleakly on Wall Street turned even darker late yesterday as an afternoon sell-off sent the Dow Jones industrial average down more than 360 points, or 2.6 percent. Investors worried that Citigroup's woes might be worsening and that consumers would not spend freely this holiday shopping season

Liz Spikol - Doing the Philadelphia Race Hustle

Liz Spikol is an "editorialist" for Philadelphia Weekly. Due to the nature and quality of her writing I stopped reading her pieces about two years ago. And every once in a while I'll actually read one of her articles just to see if I still have the same degree of disdain. You know... sometimes one may acquire a taste for something if given enough time. That has yet to happen. Recently, I find she has stooped to a new low.

Full Scale Turkish-Kurdish Conflict Appears Imminent

After a weekend of escalating attacks, protests, and rhetoric exchanged between both sides, it appears that northern Iraq is on the verge of being the location of a full scale conflict between Turkey's military forces and Kurdish Peshmerga rebels.

A 50 truck convey was observed to be advancing towards Turkish military positions along the Iraqi border. Its unclear as to whether these are supplies for the front-line troops or a component of an intended incursion.

Randi Rhodes is the Victim of a Violent Attack

Randi Rhodes was mugged on Sunday night on 39th Street and Park Ave, nearby her Manhattan apartment, while she was walking her dog Simon. According to Air America Radio late night host Jon Elliott, Rhodes was beaten up pretty badly, losing several teeth and will probably be off the air for at least the rest of the week. At of late Monday night we have not able to locate any press accounts of the attack and nothing has been posted on the AAR (http://www.airamerica.com/) website.

And the words of the prophets are written on the subway walls

This gets particularly good at about 3:20 when the Simon and Garfunkle kicks in over top of the "don't tase me bro" video (officially a meme as of Tuesday).

This is probably the best produced Ron Paul video I've seen yet.

Bush Declares Nelson Mandela Dead

In a rambling, almost incoherent manner, President Bush announced that Saddam Hussein "killed all the Mandelas."

Said the president:

"I thought an interesting comment was made when somebody said to me. I heard somebody say, you know, 'Where's Mandela?' Well, Mandela is dead because [awkward pause] Saddam Hussein killed all the Mandelas."

There are (at least) two things wrong with this statement:

1) Nelson Mandela, although born in 1918, is in fact still alive.

Jimmy Carter

Not sure if any of you caught this story, it's kind of interesting.  The two things that struck me most listening to the NPR piece are how diplomatically Carter described the incident, and the fact the reporters can't seem to fathom the idea that there are plenty of places in the world we people couldn't give two shits whether or not you are the former "leader of the free world."

Hawaii

This is one of my father-in-law's favorite jokes: A husband and wife are on vacation in Hawaii, having an argument over the proper pronunciation of the island's name. They see a local man and approach him, the husband says, "Excuse me sir, perhaps you can settle an argument for us, is the pronunciation of this island Ha WAI E or Ha VAI e". The man pauses and says, "Ha VAI E", and the man responds, "Thank you for solving that for us !", the local smiles and says "Your Velcome".

Lost History: The Phillies Collapse and Brewerytown Riots of 1964

After doing a little sort of video documentary about the neighborhood (Brewerytown) north of where I live, I set out to learn about the history of the neighborhood. One of the first things I found out about it were details relating to the 1964 race riot that occurred in the neighborhood:

Gart Hart threatens Iran with fake catalyst

This is just plain weird. I don't know if Hart understands that both the Gulf of Tonkin and the USS Maine incident were both staged acts which never actually occurred. Both events were manipulated, if not
staged, in order to bring the US into two different wars that the citizenry didn't even want. I don't know whether he is completely ignorant of history or if he simply doesn't care that he's made public threats to stage a fake event in the Persian Gulf against the leader of a foreign sovereign state. Well, lik everything else these days, anything goes.

home invasion update

ok, i went to the police station yesterday at 3:00 to talk with the arresting officer. he sat me down and explained that he only charged him with disorderly conduct and public drunkenness. i said how will we change that? he said that he felt that these charges were the only thing he could do because the guy genuinely thought it was his house. i said WHAT?! i handed the cop a copy of the biohazard clean-up bill
($750) and told him i'm still awaiting the bill from the rug cleaners. what happened next is almost as unbelievable as the entire story.
